Preview of AEC Academy

8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

It is AEC’s mission, in part, to “enhance the ability of its members to meet the emerging demands of the market through sharing knowledge and best practices”. The Council helps extruders benchmark, improve and optimize operations through its educational program, AEC Academy. This assortment of technical sessions taken from some of the Council’s most popular workshops and clinics provides a glimpse into AEC’s excellent technical education program. Included are sessions from the Process Optimization Workshop, Die Clinic, Press Maintenance Workshop and Finishing Workshop. If you’ve never attended an AEC technical workshop this is your chance to see what you’ve been missing and take home valuable information to share with your team. The following sessions are included in this workshop:

Handling Equipment Panel Discussion
Alessandro Guerrini, Turla SrL; David Turnipseed, Belco Industries, Inc.; and Carsten Dede; Omav North America LLC; David Jenista, Granco Clark
A panel discussion from the highly rated AEC Process Optimization Workshop held last November will be highlighted. A variety of handling equipment suppliers will cover topics spanning the breadth of handling system technologies and participate in a question-and-answer session with attendees.

Die Clinic Review
Richard Dickson, Hydro Aluminum Metals USA; Pawel Kasanowski, Sapa Precision Tubing
Designed by and for extrusion die professionals, the AEC Die Performance Improvement Clinic is a workshop that nearly always sells out. A topic from this popular Clinic will be presented to provide a attendees with a taste of the wealth of information available to AEC members in order to benchmark and improve operations.

The following sessions will be included:

  • Die Coating Processes, Their Benefits & Limitations
  • Die Pressure and Metal Flow

Die Clinic: The Fundamentals of High Productivity of Advanced Die Design

Eskild Hoff, Hydro; Rick Liscomb, ETS – Exco; Pawel Kazanowski, Sapa Extrusions
The following topics will be covered in this session from the popular AEC Die Clinic.

Die Coating Processes, Their Benefits & Limitations

  • Classification, benefits and limitations of various coating processes for extrusion dies
  • Material properties affected by coatings
  • Chemical Vapor Deposition – how it works
  • Manufacturing dies for CVD coating
  • Case studies – service life change and coated die wear analysis

High Productivity Dies
Pressure build up and distributions in dies and extrusion along with the role of various die components in making the extrusion (bearings, bridges, ports) will be explained.
Based on the understanding of the topics, advanced high productivity dies will be explained, as well as how they work and how they should be used.

Press Maintenance

Ron Manganello, CalesaNDE Services
Last held in April 2015, the Press Maintenance Workshop offers a wealth of topics designed especially for extruders who want to keep their extrusion presses running at peak efficiency.

The following session will be included:

  • Failures of Extrusion Press Components and their Prevention

Finishing Overview

AEC held the Finishing Workshop for extrusion finishing professionals in May 2014 to extremely positive reviews. The event included presentations on pretreatment, anodizing, paint, finishing equipment, troubleshooting and more.

The following sessions will be presented:
Anodizing Basics
Linda Newman, Darryl Jones and Mores Basaly; Houghton Metal Finishing
The anodizing process beginning with raw aluminum through sealing and troubleshooting will be discussed. Each step of the anodizing process will be briefly discussed to ensure a quality finish is achieved.

Pretreatment
Harry Adams, BCI
In some instances, "pretreatment" has been defined as simply the conversion coating placed on the aluminum extrusion surface. In this informative session, "pretreatment" will be clarified as a series of stages, each with an important role in the surface preparation process. Cleaning, rinsing and the pretreatment all play important roles in ensuring that the aluminum extrusion is properly prepared for subsequent liquid or powder paint coatings. Without these steps a coating can't be properly applied and the material's lifespan will be shortened. Learn about types of cleaning, methods to manage the cleaner, rinse quality, a comparison of types of pretreatment coatings and quality tests, and all in effective and environmentally-friendly methods.
