AEC Releases Educational Course for Architects

(Wauconda, Illinois; August 23, 2012) The Aluminum Extruders Council (AEC) has released a new online learning course for architects, designers, engineers, building developers and professionals available on, a continuing education website for building and construction professionals. The course, Aluminum Extrusions, was approved for continuing education units (CEU) by the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the USGBC's Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) and more than 10 other construction-based organizations. The Aluminum Extrusions course provides an excellent overview of the characteristics, technical information and benefits of aluminum extrusions used as a building material with a focus on whole building design, sustainability, and application possibilities.

Developed by the AEC Building & Construction Industry Promotion Team, the course includes material that:

  • Provides technical information regarding the benefits of aluminum extrusions used as a building material in terms of strength and durability
  • Outlines the sustainable characteristics of extruded aluminum building products
  • Presents solutions on how to address some of today's building design challenges in light of the increasing demand for green buildings
  • Showcases various building and construction applications and innovations using aluminum extrusions, and
  • Relates the holistic applications of extruded aluminum products to the "whole building design" concept.

"This educational course has been in development for some time, so we are glad to be able to provide architects and designers with detailed information that will help them understand and consider the use of aluminum extrusions for their projects," said AEC B&C Team leader Guy Charpentier, Marketing Manager, Bonnell Aluminum in Newnan, Georgia. "We have been told that there are many design professionals that are not familiar with the excellent characteristics that make extruded aluminum one of the best material choices for functional, aesthetic, sustainable and efficient designs. This course will provide these professionals with a better understanding of aluminum extrusions' many benefits in building and construction applications."

The Aluminum Extrusions course was developed as part of the Council's ongoing mission to raise awareness and understanding of aluminum extrusion as a sustainable, practical, cost-effective solution to design challenges. Through its industry promotion efforts, the Council is committed to bringing comprehensive education and information about extrusion's characteristics, applications, environmental benefits, design and technology to the design, engineering and academic communities.

The Aluminum Extruders Council's Aluminum Extrusions online learning course can be accessed on the AEC Daily website at, or access the course directly at is the largest provider of free online continuing education to construction professionals. Architects, engineers, interior designers and other construction professionals rely on AEC Daily to maintain their accreditation.
