With reference to Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Chair, this striking bench system is the latest addition to BD Barcelona Design’s Extrusions Collection by German designer Konstantin Grcic

Launched this past Spring at IMM Cologne, the international furnishing show, Bench B is the most recent addition to Grcic’s Extrusions Collection. The Bench B recently won the Silver Delta prize in the ADI-FAD Delta Awards, Spain’s most prestigious awards for the best Industrial Design of the year.

Grcic noted: “We started working on the bench as a family of elements from very short, like a one-seater side chair, to a long bench of up to 6 meters. It can be for indoor or outdoor, it can have arms or not, it can be upholstered or left pure aluminum. I think we have created a kit of parts which can be turned to very different typologies or uses of this bench.”

“What is interesting about this bench is that it makes reference to a very famous piece of furniture: The Barcelona Chair designed by Mies van der Rohe.” Bench B follows Grcic’s initial extrusion-based program for Table B,which uses a series of extruded sections to create an expansive top, with alternative bases. The resulting aesthetic “is the product of a combination of industrial andmanual processes. The result is a “highly crafted” piece which surprises with its solidity and lightness.”

Subsequently, and to complement the table, Grcic designed the B Chair, a wooden (natural ash) chair with an aluminum extruded tube in its structure, allowing the seat to fold and the chair to be stacked.
